Pumpkin Season

Sunday, 21 and Thursday, 25 September 2025

Shopping at Wal-Mart on Tuesday, 9 September. They're gearing up for Halloween.

Not just pumpkins. Ten days on, Shoprite has a plethora of gourds and small pumpkins.
Delightfully decorative, but not something I would choose to put on the table as food.

The smallest ones are ready for an arrangement,
together with the dried seed heads of lotus.

Winter squash, now, are delicious - once you get through the hard rind and carefully bake or steam and season with
butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg. Familiar acorn squash on the left, then butternut, don't know, and delicata.

Pumpkins that are used for Jack o'lanterns are smooth skinned, which simplifies their carving.
BTW, did you know that in the old days it was turnips that were carved? Pumpkins are easier.
.
So warty skinned pumpkins such as these would be quite difficult to deal with.

The warty white one is a Galeux d'Eysines, the orange one might be Warty Gnome,

Speaking of gnomes - I saw this handsome, sizable fellow in Frenchtown.

.

As I wheel my cart around Shoprite towards the bakery section (want onion bagels) I notice

a small pumpkin, gourds and Indian corn lined up in a display case. But wait! that's not a pumpkin.

It is a cake shaped and frosted like a pumpkin! Now that's a delightful sign of the season.
